Korean
food still rules, no matter where you are. I constantly have a craving for it
too so I finally visited Goong Korean BBQ restaurant which is one of the more
popular ones with loads of positive reviews in Perth.
Located
by the Victoria Gardens, it has a stunning waterfront view and a promenade just
outside the restaurant, which make Goong an excellent date night venue for
Korean food lovers (don’t forget that odour you will get after having a scrumptious
BBQ meal though).
Besides
the better-than-usual décor, their menu game is incredibly strong too. All the
flatlays on the menu made the food looked really tempting.
My friend picked their Signature Pork Belly BBQ set for 2 (AUD$68) that includes seared pork belly, Korean soy bean soup, steamed egg, glass noodle, salad, lettuce, side dish and rice. Now I regret not checking out the menu more carefully as the pork BBQ set was a better deal with almost exactly the same items except that there are 3 types of pork.
Oh
well, what’s order is ordered and let’s get back to the food itself. We had a
mini platter of pickled onions, kimchi and bean sprouts for each person. The
onions were a little too pungent but the other 2 tasted great. Want a refill?
Sorry they charge for refills, even for such a staple item like kimchi. Sounds
a tad too stingy as a Korean resto considered the small portion of food given.
Salad
was of standard quality and I liked that pineappley dressing very much.
Glass noodles were cooked to al dente, lightly seasoned and full of sesame aroma. Simple and delicious, only if the portion was slightly bigger.
With
saltiness and spiciness nicely balanced, the Korean soy bean soup was very yum
but would have been even better if they had some tofu in it.
Steamed
egg looked more like those Canton style ones (and definitely not authentic
Korean ones), and certainly tasted not as good. It was moist but a bit too
stiff and not seasoned at all. Had to say I was very disappointed with this
dish.
Seared
pork belly was only slightly seared on the outside and raw inside which I like
as we got to enjoy that BBQ fun. Pork belly pieces wrapped with lettuce,
onions, kimchi and a huge dollop of soybean paste were the BEST. What a pity
that the kimchi was not free flow or I would have liked this place even more.
Honestly
the food is not really that much considered the side dishes and lettuce are
usually free and bottomless in most Korean restaurants. It’s kind of a cheat to
have included these items in the sets I guess?
We concluded
our meal with a Panna cotta matcha (AUD$12). The panna cotta was bouncy, smooth
and matcha flavour was noticeable to me but probably not pronounced enough for
hardcore matcha lovers. Forget about those grapefruit ice cube and chocolate pocky
as they were just there for show.
Food was acceptable on the whole but didn’t expect such a bad execution on their steamed egg. The fact that only 3 pieces of kimchi are provided to each customer also bothers me quite a lot too. Might pay another visit ordering from their a la carte menu with a few more friends to get to know their quality better.
