Asian fusion light meals – The Don

The Don used to be a pop up restaurant back in 2015 and their ramen burger was a great hit. Great news to all food lovers in Perth as they have finally found a permanent spot to continue making their goodies. Thanks to my friend who missed their ramen burgers super badly, I paid a visit two days after their grand opening to see what the hype is about.

Yet another restaurant which has super simple décor, with white painting everywhere and black tables and chairs (which is something unique in Perth LOL).

There are also a few tables out in the courtyard if you feel like some sunshine.

They have a total of 5 to 6 items each for starter, donburi, burger, sharing plates and drinks. Quite a small menu but it works perfectly fine for me as we knew what to order even before heading there.

So we ordered a Char Shu Don, slow egg, a Ramen chicken burger with chips and a matcha crepe cake to share.

Char Shu Don (AUD$13.80) looked very appealing with carefully arranged pork slices and that plump slow egg. Can never resist a sexy yolk porn but the pork was dry and bland. Even the scallions didn’t taste fresh either. The tastiest part of the don, sadly, was the sweet soy sauce.

Was hoping the signature ramen burger could save the day but nah. The ramen layers looked funny and were totally different from photos on Instagram. They were way too thick, tasteless and soggy on the inside to be honest. Luckily the fried chicken was crispy and well seasoned but it didn’t work that well with the ramen. Probably this place is still new and it will take some time to fine tune the recipe?

The thick cut fries were crispy and tasty, to my surprise. Make sure you order one if you love fried spuds.

The matcha crepe cake (AUD$9.50) finally had shut up after whining about all the previous items. The crepe layers to cream ratio, sweetness and matcha balance were so right that it’s a must-try.

The Don made my first ever ramen burger experience kind of forgettable but I wouldn’t mind going back for more matcha crepe cakes.
