Perth’s most talked about dinner buffet – Epicurean Crown Towers

Have heard so much good about Epicurean that it has been on my to-eat list since I came to Perth and of course, the plan was never realized as I am scared off by the average price of a whopping AUD$90 per person too. A couple weeks ago I got super lucky to have had the chance to dine at Epicurean though, thanks to my amazing manager and bosses (yea seriously, you guys are phenomenal to have chosen this place for staff Christmas party :p).

It was like a dream come true for me and also a golden opportunity to blog about this place since it is like Perth’s La La Land. Alrighty, no BS, let’s get straight down to the environment and food.

Epicurean is definitely one of the most visually pleasing venues I’ve ever dined at. Every single bit looks remarkably elegant and classy, even the décor itself is a feast to the eyes. What is also worth noting is that even though the patrons are super dressed up, the ambience is still rather casual, which I like a lot. Afterall we were there to eat till we drop (LOL).

Buffet table time! From appetizer to after-dinner cheese, western to Asian dishes, as well as savoury to sweet items, Epicurean has got you covered so don’t feel guilty to pig out at all.

Here’s a closer look of some of the sections/dishes:

Salads: a few choices of pre-mixed salad or make your own with all the veggies and dressings available

Cheese table and crackers

Leatherwood honey comb (OMG so cool!)

Breads

Seafood stand: king prawns, crabs and Thai style prawns and squid

Oysters of the night: Sydney rock and Coffin Bay

Sashimi, sushi and smoked salmon

Western (meat section): herb roasted lamb racks, Yorkshire puddings, roasted angus beef and roasted pork

Other savoury dishes:

Indian food: quite an impressive section. So many types of curry and dipping sauces for naan bread!

Chinese/Asian food: Yang chow fried rice, black pepper crab, Thai style stir fried tiger prawn and squid, crispy chicken lollipops with ginger soy, Shanghai pork belly with eggs, roasted Peking duck with condiments

Drum roll please…just because it’s everyone’s most anticipated part of the meal – dessert and there are a lot to choose from.

Light sweets: brownie, passionfruit marshmallow, pistachio financier and raspberry marshmallow

Vanilla slice pyramid

Macarons and chocolate cups

Handcrafted chocolates

Petite cakes and desserts

Whole cakes

Ice cream toppings

Sesame mochi and peanut mochi

Assorted fruits

Already drooling all these food photos? You gotta continue reading.

Attention seafood lover! Go there hungry as nearly everything tasted fresh and yummy. Those fatty salmon and king fish sashimi, and bouncy chilled king prawns were must-haves. Oysters were briny and slightly sweet too but a little too small for my liking. Smoked salmon was just very average and not flavoursome enough.

Make sure you stuff yourself with loads of roasted angus beef and pork belly if you are a meat lover. Saffron risotto with crab, pumpkin & feta croquette and sautéed Lyonnaise potats were surprisingly HEAVENLY, with those ravioli and paella being quite on point too. That seared king snapper with orange could have been seasoned a bit more.

Couldn’t help going for a second round of seafood because of that high quality (probably cos I haven’t had them for a while too?). Cold cuts were alright but I got too carried away by the salmon sashimi and prawn.

Crispy chicken lollipops with ginger soy was my favourite for this round. It was crispy and pleasantly sweet with a mild ginger kick. How I wish I could have those every day. Thai style stir fried tiger prawn and butter chicken with naan bread were not to be missed either. Shanghai pork belly was tender and full of flavour but forget about the eggs as they were just ordinary hard boiled ones. The remaining Chinese dishes were not as outstanding either: fried rice didn’t taste like the authentic ones; peking duck was too dry and they should be served in thin boneless slices so they can be wrapped in the Chinese pancakes and eaten more easily.

Could hardly down anything else by the time I finished the savoury items but there’s no way I would skip the sweet ending so I got some miniature desserts and ice cream :p

Grab a key lime pie the second you spot them! The combination of sweet meringue cream, refreshing lemon curd and biscuit crumbs sent me to cloud 9 after my first bite. Macaron and handmade chocolate were as great as those from patisseries and gourmet chocolatiers so try your best to devour a few more pieces. Red velvet & chocolate cake and blood orange jelly were pretty average. Give that honey jelly & coconut citrus cream and green cream filled cone a pass. The coconut jelly tasted like some kind of chemicals and the green cone had gone soft.

I have gone OMG for so many times but hey, they make some seriously delish ice cream too. The strawberry ice cream was incredibly creamy and rich and mango sorbet was smooth and tangy.

Apologies for not being able to try out any of the super tempting whole cakes cos I was just too full. Despite of a few misses, the overall quality of their food is really high so it’s definitely worth a visit, especially for celebrating special occasions or festivals. Would have been better to include free flow soft drinks or juice for an even fuller dining experience (and for that price :p).
