Piri piri flame grilled chicken – Flaming Frango

Having your undergraduate degrees (or whatever courses) completed in Australia or the USA, I guess Nando’s is no stranger to students when it comes to flame grilled chicken. Cravings for their piri piri chicken and thick cut fries constantly hit even after I’m back and YAY we finally got Flaming Frango which serves these in Hong Kong (oh well…actually it’s been there for a while but I wasn’t aware of its existence until I got invited to their tasting night…my bad my bad)!

Party animals might have known about this long ago as Flaming Frango is located in the heart of buzzing Soho on Staunton Street. A great meal idea before or after your Friday drinks ;)

The restaurant offers a wide range of food items including small bites, burgers and wraps. Of course, their piri piri chickens are not to be missed.

Whether a booze hound or goodie goodie, you can surely find your favourite drinks from their all-round list of wine, beers, cocktails and soft drinks.

Here’s my lychee and lemongrass colada. A slightly sweet, creamy and refreshing alcoholic drink to go with all the proteins and carbs I was about to devour.

Chicken & mushroom croquettes ($78/4pcs) were crispy on the outside and soft inside. Fully stuffed with chicken and mushroom bits, it was quite a fulfilling appetizer that quelled my hunger right away. And man their pirioli was the STAR!!! It made everything taste better!!

Portobello mushroom strips ($68) were just irresistible! Thick cut Portobello pieces coated in golden crunchy batter themselves tasted great but it gave me multiple foodgasms with their creamy and flavoursome pirioli.

Piri piri prawns ($108) were fresh and well-seasoned but rather ordinary compared with the previous two dishes.

Loved the orange and cherry tomatoes in Halloumi cheese sticks ($78) which balanced the savoury flavour. Halloumi cheese could have been served hotter and softer though.

Oh wow so we had a Sweet & spicy chicken burger w/ piri fries and coleslaw ($158) before our grilled chicken was served. Didn’t have much expectation initially but I would definitely recommend this! Chicken covered in spicy sauce was extraordinarily juicy and succulent, with pineapple adding an extra sweetness. The bun was fluffy and soft too so the whole burger was really palatable! Fries (yes, thick ones) were served piping hot and lightly salted. Just couldn’t stop dipping them in the pirioli. Nom nom nom.

Unfortunately the full chicken ($260) was a letdown to me despite being a house special. Some parts were quite dry even though it’s packed with flavours while the pieces my friend had were totally fine. Would have been more enjoyable if the whole chicken was juicier and more tender.

Overall great food and awesome vibes. Just get the chickens done right and I’m going back for my piri piri chicken fix for sure.
