Wild Thyme Tasting Night - Wild Thyme

Despite being a foodie and a Greek food fan, I seldom do minority food hunting in Hong Kong. Somehow only a very small group of people are into exotic cuisines and very few places seem to be able to do it right. Wild Thyme’s tasting night a couple weeks ago managed to change my view by a tiny little bit with their dips platter and kanafeh though.

Wild Thyme started out as a pure vegetarian restaurant that focuses on Middle-Eastern / Mediterranean cuisine and has now grown into catering for non-vegetarians as well with a revamped menu.

So here’s the menu for the night. Quite an extensive one and luckily everything was served in small portion so it’s not too overwhelming by the time we finished everything.

Tabooleh – Italian parsley, cracked wheat, tomato, onion and mint with olive oil dressing

A refreshing and light starter for the night, only a tad too oily.

Mezze (cold) dips platter (left to right):

Hummos Har – chickepea puree with homemade red chilli sauce

Hummos – classic chkcipea puree

Wild Thyme – roasted nuts with smoked chilli dip

Jalapeno – charcoal grilled jalapeno with nuts dip

Baba Ghanooj – grilled eggplany with green bell pepper, parsley and pomegranate

Truffle Hummos – chickpea puree with black truffle

Who doesn’t love hummus? With warm pita bread fresh off the oven, it easily became the crowd pleaser of the night. My favourites are hummus and truffle hummus. For spicy food lovers, jalapeno and wild thyme are totally your thing.

Wajbat (Mains):

Fried rice – Arabic style fried rice with crispy mince topped with toasted almonds, cashews, pine nuts and raisins
The nuts brought crunchy textures to the rice and made it more interesting while the flavour of the rice and raisins totally reminded me of Thai style pineapple fried rice. Not bad but not too memorable either.

Mojadra – lentil and rice topped with crispy onion served with red hot sauce
This tasted very similar to the previous dish except there were crispy onion and hot sauce. Prefer the former one over this.

Shish Tawook – charcoal grilled chiciken on pita bread served with roasted potato, chilli and garlic sauce

Was expecting a little bit more from the only non-vegetarian dish but the grilled chicken was a bit dry and bland and the 2 sauces didn’t really help. Potatoes on the side was surprisingly flavourful.

Helwyat (Desserts):

Kanafeh - Soft sweet cheese topped shredded pastry with pistachio

Bozza – traditional Arabic ice-cream topped with pistachio

Have seen kanafeh quite a lot on Instagram and finally my turn to try it! It looked sort of ordinary but man it’s packed with sweet and salty flavours, as well as chewy and crunchy textures. So good. So yummy. I really enjoyed it, especially when topped with ice cream and pistachio (even though the ice cream itself was quite average). Maybe WT can consider selling this as one single item on the menu.

Food was average, ambience was great and their staff was really friendly and helpful. What really concerned me is the incredibly long preparation time. We waited at least 20 minutes for almost every single dish so there is definitely still room for improvement.
