To
most Hongkongers, it’s always about all you can eat, sushi and sashimi when it
comes to Japanese cuisine but come on, izakaya style food also makes up a fair
share of this East Asian cuilinary experience. Tori Izakaya is one that is
worth trying out in groups of 3 to 4.
Conveniently
located at the heart of Causeway Bay, it’s a lovely dinner venue to enjoy
dinner and a few drinks with friends right after work. The inside was like most
other typical izakayas, where the tables and chairs are quite small and packed
together. It was also really dark that we had to turn on the flashlights while
reading the menu (and taking photos, of course).
My
friends knew what to order so all I needed to do was to sit back and relax.
Our
dinner began with razor clams ($108@) that were covered with spring onions and
chopped garlic. It was fresh and bouncy but just a bit more seasoning was
needed to hit the spot.
Onsen
egg with tofu salad ($88) came in large portion full of chilled lettuce, silky
smooth tofu, tomato slices, an oozing onsen egg and loads of sesame dressing. A
healthy and tasty salad to prepare ourselves for the fatty food to be eaten.
Whelk
($368) was diced and served raw on a mini stove. The coolest presentation ever!
Make sure you have it once it boils or the whelk would get too rubbery. Similar
to the razor clams, more salt should have been added to lift the flavour.
Egg
plant with miso sauce ($78) was well seasoned (finally) as every single piece
was smothered in the sauce and cooked to the right texture while not being too
soft.
Thick
cut ox tongue ($58@) is a must order! Thick cut succulent ox tongue was grilled
to golden brown and incredibly springy. Best enjoyed with some sake or wine!
Lobster
with miso sauce ($298) was another highlight that gave us all a foodgasm. That fresh crustacean flesh with tasty miso
sauce was simply flawless.
Chicken
wings ($34) are always irresistible and easy to eat. These ones were lightly
grilled for a crispy exterior and juicy interior.
We
were all pretty surprised by the quality of the lamb chops ($58@). So tender
and tasty that we ranked this one of the best dishes of the night.
Overall a satisfying dinner with above average quality food, a bit on the pricey side though. Would still come back for special occasions or dinner gatherings.
